There will be several hundred runners taking part in this weekend's 90th annual NJSIAA Cross Country Championships at Holmdel Park. Some of the races are likely to boil down to one-on-one battles between just two runners.

In the girls Group 3 race, Voorhees' Lanie Thompson, a senior, will be going for her third consecutive state title. Thompson's main competition figures to be Kingway junior Chelsea Ley.

Thompson has defeated Ley all eight times the two have met head-to-head in cross country and track, but Ley's recent eye-opening performance at the Shore Coaches Invitational served notice that Thompson's reign may be in jeopardy.
