NJSIAA - Meet of Champs, 25-year-old mark on Ley's radar

When Chelsea Ley runs, she doesn't run as if a large pack is chasing her. She runs as if she's the one chasing something.

The Kingsway High School junior has set no less than six 3.1-mile course records over the past two fall seasons. Now, she'd like to get one more.

Ley, along with defending champion Melanie Thompson of Voorhees, will go for a 25-year-old mark on the difficult Holmdel State Park course on Saturday at the NJSIAA Cross Country Meet of Champions. The record of 17:35 was set by Edison's Janet Smith at the Meet of Champions in 1983.

Smith broke the mark of 17:40 set by Washington Township's Michelle Rowen in 1982. Ley came the closest of anybody to breaking that mark in October, when she ran a 17:44 at the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel.
